Talking Design: Sara Gilbane
Named one of House Beautiful’s Top 20 Next Wave Designers and TradHome’s Top 20 New Traditional Designers, Sara Gilbane has an incredibly impressive resume! We appreciate her elegance combined with a youthful, chic flair. Read our interview with the talented designer and view her beautiful spaces after the jump.
How did you break into the design industry?
I always enjoyed decorating and was drawn to studio art, art history, and fabric but when I started working with family friend, Celerie Kemble, in 2003 I knew I was right where I was supposed to be. Working with Celerie was invaluable. I learned so much over those five and a half years and I still consider her a mentor.
Opening my own firm in 2008 with several fantastic clients ready to go was bittersweet. It was sad to leave the Kemble girls but I was eager to put my stamp on things.
What are some elements of your signature design style?
Colors, pattern, texture, accessories, trims, and and overall feeling of comfort.
What’s your view on artwork and photography in design?
A project is not complete without art. Selecting and hanging art is one of my favorite parts of the job. It elevates my design.
Are there any tips you give your clients for finding the right art for their space?
Scale is everything and you should look at what your space is calling for, a pop of color? A bit of gloss?
What are you favorite images on TFW?
I love Lisa’s portfolio—especially this ‘Prada Splat.’ The colors are fantastic!
