Art’s rising star: Fashion Photography

Looks like we were onto something after all! We were thrilled to read Melanie Abrams validating article, “Fashion Photography is the Art World’s Rising Star,” in The New York Times last week. The piece discusses the growing trend in the overlap of the fashion and art industries, as curators around the globe are choosing to exhibit fashion photography and decisively calling it “art.” According to Peter Lindbergh, whose work is showing at the Gagosian Gallery in Paris, “fashion photographers are the new painters.”

Abrams states that fashion photography’s emergence as a “true art” can be traced back to the 2008 economic crisis. Mark McKenna, executive director of the Herb Ritts Foundation, comments that “people wanted to surround themselves with images of glamour and beauty as things were tough, and fashion photos represented the opposite of what was happening in their day-to-day lives.”

super interesting read, and an opinion of fashion as art with which we wholeheartedly agree! Decorate your home with a gorgeous selection of TFW’s fashion photography.
